HOW TO LOOK GREAT IN 2008

Carol Goodsman, owner of Alice Carroll gives us her top ten style tips for 2008.

1. Most of us own far more make-up than we use. To start the New Year, clear out all of the old items you no longer use. Old make-up will just collect bacteria.

2. Each year, manufacturers bring out new products to help us look good. Think about your skin-type and make a point of checking out those products aimed at you. Be honest with yourself: your skin will not be the same as it was ten years ago.

3. Check that the colours in your wardrobe suit your natural complexion, hair and eye colour. Some of us like to stand out in bold colours, whilst others prefer a more subtle palette, so make sure that your wardrobe reflects your personality in this way too.

4. Think about the styles that suit you. Are frills and lace really you? Do you enjoy wearing flamboyant clothes? Do you prefer a more relaxed style? Or perhaps you like more timeless, classic pieces? Look at your body shape honestly as it is right now and decide what you want to emphasize and what to play down. Then work out the shapes, lengths, sleeves and necklines that will help you to achieve this.

5. Start the New Year with a wardrobe that works for you. Discard all of those items, including accessories, that simply don’t suit you. Be ruthless: clothes you won’t wear take up space and make it harder to identify what is missing.

6. To make sure you look good every single day, go through your entire wardrobe and put outfits together, listing and cross-referencing. It takes a few hours to do, but once it is done, it will be quick and simple to put together an outfit for any occasion. When you buy new clothes or accessories, you can add them to your existing list.

7. Think about your lifestyle. Has it changed and does your wardrobe reflect those changes? It is important that your clothes work with your lifestyle and you need to identify any gaps that should be filled.

8. Some new fashion trends will be for you and some won’t (see tip 4). Work out the most efficient way to keep your wardrobe up to date. Often it is best done by changing some of your accessories. You may just need a few well-chosen basics.

9. Get to know your own body as it is now. We all change shape over time and it is important to take a look in the mirror and learn to love what you see. Make the most of what you have by choosing clothes wisely.

10. Make time for yourself, however hectic your lifestyle. Relax in a candlelit bath, schedule exercise classes, or go shopping for clothes. Those around you will benefit too if you are kinder to yourself.

Have a happy and stylish 2008.
