HOW TO APPLY MAKE-UP

Carol Goodsman, owner of Alice Carroll, gives us her top ten tips.
We are all individuals and whilst some of us enjoy experimenting with makeup, others prefer a more natural look. Whether you opt for dramatic effects or a polished, but minimal make-up, the following tips will help.

1. Match your foundation to the colour of your skin at the jaw line in natural daylight, choosing warm or cool tones according to your skin tone. However, always apply your make-up in a light similar to that in which you will be seen all evening.

2. Always apply foundation, powder and blusher in downward strokes, following the direction of hair growth, otherwise hair will show when the light catches your face.

3. Never be tempted to buy a powder to match your foundation; it will create a mask-like effect and will look old fashioned. A loose or pressed translucent powder will give a much more modern look. Correct imperfections with foundation or concealer and use powder only to ‘fix’ your make-up.

4. Find out where to apply blusher by feeling your cheekbones with your fingertips, from the apple of the cheek right up to the ear. Apply colour to the apple first, blend upwards and then down to finish at the apple, whether using a cream or a powder.

5. To establish your perfect brow shape before plucking, brush eyebrows into position, then use a white kohl pencil underneath to draw the line you want. Make sure brows are symmetrical and only pluck the white hairs. Always pluck hairs in the direction of their
growth, to ensure that they grow back flat.

6. When applying eyeshadow, first dust some face powder under the eyes, so that any falling colour can be swept away with a soft brush, leaving no stray colour on the cheeks.

7. If you get mascara on your face, leave it until it is dry; it will be much easier to remove.

8. Whether applying lipstick with a brush, a liner or straight from the tube, always start from the outer corner of the mouth and work to the centre – it is the only way to achieve symmetry.

9. Applying a lighter coloured lipstick to the centre of your lips and blending, or applying gloss just to the centre will make your lips appear fuller.

10. Emphasize either your mouth or your eyes – never both unless you have very strong, dramatic colouring.
