SHOP ‘TIL YOU DROP Personal shopping was once the preserve of the rich and famous, but these days anyone can use a personal shopper. Is this just the latest trend or are we no longer able to shop for ourselves? Could you benefit from their advice, instead of using the old method of taking a friend or relative shopping with you? So who is a personal shopping service useful for? For weddings and special events, when you want to look just right and where mistakes can be costly, it is helpful to have the guidance of a personal shopper. For those who want to look good, but have extremely busy schedules, a personal shopper can save a great deal of time. Some of us like to shop only twice a year for a spring/summer and an autumn/winter wardrobe. It is particularly important then not to make mistakes that will be with you for the next year. A significant change of lifestyle or a change in weight that may necessitate a new wardrobe are also good reasons to ask advice, as we often lack confidence as well as experience when changing our usual shopping habits. There are two different types of personal shopper: The In-Store Personal Shopper Almost all of the larger high street stores now employ a personal shopper who can show customers the new fashions for the season. With this service, the customer will be taken to a specially designated room within the store. The in-store personal shopper will then discuss the customers’ requirements with them and bring a selection of clothes for them to try on. However, he or she will only have had a short amount of time to spend on analyzing the looks that will suit the individual, so it may be their own personal taste and style that will influence the items they choose for you. If you are just looking for the latest styles, this service may be very useful to you. This type of personal shopper is tied to a particular store and can only show the customer the styles and colours available there. For those who only want to visit one store, rather than looking further, this service means that you will not have to fight the crowds and will not have the stress of finding what you need alone. This service is free to the client, as the personal shopper is a salesperson for the store. The Independent Personal Shopper An independent personal shopper will spend time with their client, analyzing the styles that will suit their figure, colouring, personality and lifestyle. They will know exactly what will look good on you, regardless of their own tastes. With no ties to any store, they will be able to advise on the styles, colours and prices available in all of the high street, designer stores, catalogues and on-line companies and on the figure types to which their clothes are best suited. They will have a comprehensive knowledge of each shop’s stock during any season and will be able to source whatever you are looking for, provided it exists, even if you normally find clothes or shoes harder to find. They will always discuss their client’s requirements and budget with them in advance of a shopping trip, so that the best use can be made of the time and funds available. This type of shopper is an independent consultant and receives no commission from the stores. Every item you buy will be carefully selected for you, meaning that you will not waste money on items that hang in your wardrobe unworn. A private personal shopper will fulfill any brief you give them, to any budget, whether you want to simply be shown how and where to shop, without spending anything, or replenish your entire wardrobe. So personal shopping is for everyone and increasingly for men as well as women. Since the ‘Trinny and Susannah’ revolution highlighted the importance of wearing clothes that actually suit us, getting it right has become increasingly important for most people. Personal shopping is a trend that’s here to stay, so why not try a personal shopping service for yourself and see the difference it makes to your confidence and your certainty that everything in your wardrobe will work for you?
