THE BIG DAY

Your wedding day is one of the most important of your life and will be recorded in photographs and videos, so it is vital to every bride that she look her absolute best. The following guidelines will help you to make the right choices for your big day.

DRESS COLOUR

Hold a piece of gold and a piece of silver jewellery to your face in natural daylight to see which suits your skin tone better. If silver is for you, your skin has a cool tone and you may be able to go for a pure white dress. If this seems too harsh, opt for a soft, pinkish white or a pale pastel. Those who suit gold have a warm skin tone and should look at ivory or pale gold dresses.

DRESS STYLE

Think about the style of the clothes you wear every day. Do you go for a classic, timeless style, a more girlie look, dramatic statements, or are you more comfortable in a natural style. As I often tell my clients, the compliment you want to hear is, ‘You look beautiful in that dress’, not, ‘That’s a beautiful dress’. Go for a style that really suits you, not the latest fashion.

Consider which parts of your body you most like and which you want to play down: a dress that emphasises your waist is perfect if you have an hourglass figure; a slash neckline will widen shoulders, drawing attention away from broad hips.

Also worth considering is the style and scale of the jewellery and accessories that suit you best. If you wear small jewellery in everyday life, don’t try to make a statement with large flowers. If you suit large, dramatic accessories, don’t wear tiny flowers in your hair or go for anything understated.

MAKE-UP

You want your make-up to stay perfect all day, so whether you do it yourself, or use a professional, have a practise session first and make a note of exactly what you use. Don’t go for anything too far from your normal look; try to bring out the best possible you, not create a different person.

Waterproof mascara is a must, even if you don’t normally wear it, as is a make-up base, to ensure that your make-up lasts all day. Use long-lasting lipstick formulas that will withstand all of the eating, drinking and kissing on the day, or, if you find these too drying, apply a lot of lipstick, blot and repeat. Unless you have a very strong natural lip line, use a lip liner in your natural lip colour before applying lipstick, so that you will still look good in photographs if your lipstick wears off. Always take your lipstick with you for touch-ups, so if you have your make-up done professionally, remember to ask for the shade.

HAIR

As with make-up, always practise beforehand and don’t go for anything too different from your normal look; unless you usually have a dramatic style, don’t suddenly wear one on the day. Take a photograph of your dress to show your hairdresser and remember to take into account the style of any flowers or jewellery you are wearing and whether or not you will be wearing flowers or a tiara in your hair.

I have concentrated here on the classic wedding dress in varying shades of white or ivory, but whatever the style or colour of the outfit you choose for your wedding, these guidelines will help you to look your best.
